Commissions

An angular wooden Christina Boy bench against a white background

Each year I make many custom pieces for my clients new and old. These commissions can be something completely unique for their space and needs, or taking something I've made previously and modifying the measurements or wood species to work better for their intended purpose.

You can browse our portfolio and past commissions to get inspired and check out the FAQs below for more information on the process.

FAQ

  • With the demand for custom pieces, lead times can vary. My usual lead time is about 20-24 weeks, but this can vary greatly depending on how involved your project is and what other projects are also on the docket. Your turn around time could be quicker if for instance you order a set of stools, and there is already another order for stools: it's easy to integrate your order with the other and do them at the same time.

  • The types of material, design complexity, specific hardware choices, and estimated time all play into the estimate of what your project will cost. Once I have some basic details about your project, I am usually able to give a range on what the project will cost. If you have a certain budget in mind, please let me know, and I will gladly design within that budget.

Commissions are made to order and are therefore not returnable.

  • After connecting we’ll brainstorm your ideas together. If you have pictures of something you've seen somewhere or you like design elements of either some of my or other pieces, these are all very helpful visual tools that you can share with me. I will make you some sketches with several options to choose from.

Once we have settled on a design, I will provide you with an estimate. Once you’ve made your choice, you will receive and sign a contract. After that, I request a 50% deposit before beginning any projects. Once you've made the deposit your project will get put on the schedule. I will send updates along the way. Upon completion, we will schedule a time for delivery. If I ship your item to you, at this point I will request the remaining balance and if I’ll deliver your item to you we can settle the remaining balance then and your piece will be ready for you to enjoy!

  • I try to stay as local as possible with all my sourcing. I use primarily domestic lumber in my work that has been kiln dried to guarantee proper moisture levels for the wood to remain stable. The majority of it comes from my trusted lumber yard CP Johnson Lumber near Culpeper, VA. His selection is top notch, however, I also have a few other local sources I can lean on if he doesn't have what I need for your project.

  • We do! Smaller items like wall hooks, lamps, etc. I am happy to ship USPS priority. Small furniture pieces like stools or side tables I can ship with FedEx. Bigger items I usually like to deliver and install in person so that I can guarantee a project’s safe arrival. If this isn’t possible, I will build a crate for your piece and have a freight company deliver it to you.

The flat rate delivery for a 75 mile radius from my studio is $150. If you wish to have a piece delivered with a destination that is farther away, please reach out and we will provide you with a quote.

  • Inspiration images are extremely helpful to get a sense of what you are looking for. While I don't reproduce pieces already created because that specific piece is already someone's intellectual property, we can talk through what aspects of that piece are inspiring to you and we can find elements that can be used in your own project.

  • Unfortunately, I do not have a physical store. You can purchase from my online shop, or find my work at several galleries that carry my work. Check out my events page to see if I will have a show coming up where you can visit me and view my work in person. If there are items in my inventory that you would like to check out, we can arrange an appointment at which time I can set these pieces up for you to view in my studio.
